Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Civic engagement refers to the active participation of individuals in political and community activities aimed at improving the welfare of society. For youths, this engagement is crucial, as it fosters a sense of responsibility, promotes democratic values, and ensures the representation of their interests in political processes. In Nigeria, print media, including newspapers and magazines, has historically played a significant role in informing and educating citizens about political processes, societal issues, and civic duties. However, with the rise of digital media, the influence of traditional print media has been questioned, especially in rural areas like Yauri Local Government Area in Kebbi State. Despite the challenges posed by technological advancements, print media continues to have a crucial role in mobilizing youths for civic engagement, especially in areas with limited internet access. This study explores how print media is used to mobilize youths in Yauri for participation in civic activities, including voter education, community service, and public awareness campaigns. By examining the effectiveness of print media in this context, the study aims to contribute to a better understanding of how traditional media can complement digital tools in fostering civic participation in rural Nigerian communities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While there is considerable literature on the role of media in civic engagement, there is limited research on the specific role of print media in mobilizing youths for such activities in rural Nigerian communities. Yauri Local Government Area in Kebbi State has seen a growing youth population, many of whom lack adequate exposure to the democratic processes that affect their lives. While radio and social media have become popular tools for political engagement, print media continues to provide valuable information in a way that is accessible to a broader segment of the population, particularly older generations and those with limited internet access. The challenge, however, lies in determining the effectiveness of print media in reaching and mobilizing the youth demographic in rural areas like Yauri. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the role of print media in promoting civic engagement among youths in Yauri and determining how effectively it contributes to their involvement in the political and civic activities.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of print media in mobilizing youths for civic engagement in Yauri Local Government Area.
  2. To examine the types of print media used by youths in Yauri for civic engagement.
  3. To identify the barriers to using print media for mobilizing youths in Yauri for civic participation.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How effective is print media in mobilizing youths for civic engagement in Yauri Local Government Area?
  2. What types of print media do youths in Yauri primarily use for information on civic engagement?
  3. What are the barriers to the effectiveness of print media in promoting youth participation in civic activities in Yauri?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Print media significantly contributes to mobilizing youths for civic engagement in Yauri Local Government Area.
  2. Newspapers and local magazines are the most widely used forms of print media for civic engagement among youths in Yauri.
  3. Limited access to print media and low literacy rates are major barriers to effective youth mobilization for civic engagement in Yauri.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it provides valuable insights into the role of traditional print media in fostering civic engagement in rural communities, an area often overshadowed by the rise of digital media. By focusing on Yauri Local Government Area, the study will help to identify effective strategies for using print media to promote political participation and community involvement among youths in Kebbi State and other similar rural areas. The findings will also contribute to the broader discourse on the role of media in democratic processes, particularly in regions where digital infrastructure is limited.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus specifically on the role of print media in mobilizing youths for civic engagement in Yauri Local Government Area, Kebbi State. It will not cover other forms of media, such as radio or digital platforms. One limitation is that the study will rely on surveys and interviews, which may not capture all factors influencing youth participation. Additionally, the study may not account for all possible forms of civic engagement, as it will focus primarily on political participation and community activities.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Civic Engagement: Active participation in political, social, and community activities aimed at improving society, including voting, volunteering, and participating in public discussions.
  2. Print Media: Traditional forms of media that include newspapers, magazines, and pamphlets, which are printed and distributed physically or digitally in hard copy.
  3. Youth: Individuals between the ages of 18 and 35 who are active in the community and potentially influenced by media messages.
